How to use this website

Below are some tips for getting the most out of The Languages Gateway.

* Please note, if you encounter technical problems with the site, please check your browser is up to date. The site is designed to be used on the current (and penultimate) versions of the most widely used browsers including Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.

* Don't hesitate to send us any feedback or suggestions.

1) How to use the homepage

Explore the homepage to discover our editors' selections of suggested thematic searches, and articles from across the world of languages.

2) How to use the main Gateway search page

Use the filter search page to filter our database of resources and find information, inspiration, networks, partnerships, resources, courses and other tools matching your search criteria.

How the filters work:

With no filters selected, the page shows all of the resources currently listed on the site.

As you select filters from the drop-down menus, the results narrow down to reflect your search. You can select one filter, or several filters, from any of the drop-down menus - or none! It is not necessary to select from every drop-down.

Your selected filters are displayed at the top of your search results. You can delete these selections individually, or 'clear all'.

Tips:

  • Search for key terms first – selecting too many filters may restrict the number of results. This is because the more filters you select, the more focussed the search - and the fewer the results.
  • Be aware that your filter combinations are 'and' (not 'or') searches. This means, for example:
    • Imagine you are looking for all results relevant to primary-level French and Spanish in England. You should search twice: once for Primary + French + All England, then again for Primary + Spanish + All England. This is because if you select both French 'and' Spanish, you will only see results which are tagged for both (thereby missing out on all the results tagged for just one of those languages). Luckily, it is easy to remove an individual filter selection and add another - the results will automatically update.
  • 'Audience' filters select resources 'written for this audience'.
  • For some of the bigger sites listed, you may have to explore within them to find your specific area of interest. As this portal evolves, we will list a greater number of more specific pages from within these sites, so please contact us (as below) with your feedback and suggestions, and come back soon to check!
  • Save or share your search by copying the URL of your page.

Not found what you are looking for/expecting? At launch, we are aware that some areas will be lacking in results, or could be improved. If you have suggestions for additions to the list, or feedback on any of the results, please get in touch - we'd love to hear from you! The site will be updated regularly in response to users' needs and contributions.

  • For example, areas we are already working on include streamlining the number of filter options, making search results more specific, and indicating which results are subscription/paid-for only.
